The factory UV coating on the lens breaks down. Once it goes, the polycarbonate underneath oxidizes and the surface roughens. Sun does most of it, and blowing sand on the Llano Estacado does the rest.
The lens gets wet sanded through progressively finer grits to cut the oxidized layer off, polished back to clarity, then resealed so it does not haze straight back over. The resealing step is the one cheap kits skip, which is why those results last months instead of years.
